His SaaS Secret Is 2,000 Customer Calls, and Your Business Gets Them Free
Starter Story sat down with Gaurav, the founder of Fastlane, a SaaS that went from zero to $69,000 a month in about two months. Pat asked for the secret and got the least glamorous answer in business: customer calls. Two thousand of them, twenty a week, every week, run as a system. This is not a takedown. The system is genuinely excellent.
I am here for the owner watching who thinks this is SaaS advice. It is not. A SaaS founder had to engineer conversations with a rainbow button and seven days of free access. Your front desk, your phone, your truck, and your chair get those conversations free every single day. You do not need more conversations. You need a capture system.
The rainbow button you do not need
Fastlane put one button in the product: book a call with the team, get seven days of extra access. That button bought two thousand conversations. Now count yours. A med spa or a contractor has a thousand customer conversations a year walking through the door, and most owners capture zero of them. Nothing written, nothing reviewed, nothing changed. Start treating every walk in like Gaurav treats a booked call.
The three questions that beat any focus group
The calls run on principles from The Mom Test, and the three questions are the best free consulting you will ever get. How are you solving this today? What did it cost you? What happens if you do nothing? Notice what is never asked: would you use this, because polite people lie. Put those questions in the mouth of whoever already talks to your customers, your tech, your estimator, your front desk, and one honest answer a day beats any focus group you could buy.
The capture system
Here is the part most people skip, and it is the whole game. Fastlane put a note taker on every call, condensed everything into Notion, and organized it with Claude into a customer intelligence dashboard. The calls are only half of it. The writing down is the other half. Your version costs nothing: one written line per conversation, right at the counter. What they asked for, what confused them, what almost made them walk. Then one weekly review and one change a week. A year of that compounds like interest.
Your power users already told you
Phase three is customer success run like an operations department. PostHog told Gaurav who used the product most, and he called exactly those people. Your point of sale already knows who buys most and who comes back. Call your ten best customers this week and ask what you really do for them. His power users pointed at short form content and he doubled down entirely. Your best customers will niche you down faster than any strategy meeting.
Start Monday
Gaurav launched wide, as Casius AI, and his customers narrowed the offer into a business worth a million a year. Yours will do the same if you write down what they say. Ask the three questions, write the one line, hold the weekly review. The conversations are already happening in your building. Start capturing them Monday.
